So we did find out at the end of July we were having our third little boy, which was my intuition about the baby. We had a great summer vacation and then my biggest boy went off to kindergarten in September. It was fairly traumatic I have to say – not just that he was growing up but first he missed his orientation day with a super high fever and strep throat. His first day of class he was so scared and didn’t want to leave me. He takes the schoolbus and that took over a month to adjust to (admittedly he only goes 2 days a week). I cried, he cried – it really wasn’t pretty. Fortunately now in his 5th month of kindergarten things are going great. He’s okay with the bus (not thrilled but not crying!) and he loves his teacher and he loves school. He did great on his first report card too!
So on to the story of the birth of our third baby! I finished work at the end of October and settled into life at home fully expecting baby to come by mid-November, when I’d be around 38 weeks. My first two boys were both born around 38 weeks and I was dilating by 35 weeks this time, so even my doctor seemed convinced it would be “any day”. Ha, ha.
Lots of boredom and walking and washing my floor on hands and knees later, the baby was still waiting for its moment. Finally the day before my due date I awoke at 12:30 am to a trickle of water and my first true contraction. It was a hard one right off the bat and I remember thinking – oh yeah, this hurts! I wandered my house for about half an hour, timing contractions online with contraction master and realized they were actually pretty close together already, although not exactly regular – but every 4-6 minutes was pretty close for just having started. So I tried to wake up DH (not easy) and finally said to him “Do you not want to meet you new son?” and he finally leapt out of bed and we got moving. I then called my best friend who was coming to take me to the hospital while DH rushed the kids to my sister’s house, a 40 minute drive away.
At approximately 2 am I was on my way to the hospital (20 minutes away) and DH had left shortly before with the kids. I was so uncomfortable on that ride, contractions were 3-4 minutes apart only by then and my poor friend was looking a little stressed as we sped down the highway. We got to the hospital and got checked in quickly. Although I had thought I wanted a natural birth I totally was begging for an epidural at this point – wow it hurt! But a nurse quickly checked me and said I was 8 cm already and there wasn’t really time. So we gave my DH a call and said to hurry up and things really started moving then. I went into a shower for a bit which was nice and I’m pretty sure I was in true transition then cause I was a mess. I was crying and panicking – I think it all just went too quickly for me. My first labour (second child) was 19 hours and much gentler. DH arrived and it was time to push at around 3:50 am (only 3.5 hours or so after first pain) I was not effective for a while cause I was still panicky and scared. Finally I realized I had no choice but to push the little guy out and I gave it my all. At approximately 5:15 am Sawyer was born and boy was he big! 9 pounds 9oz and 20.25 inches long. Soft dark hair and big beautiful eyes. Such a gorgeous boy!
I was home by the next day and it’s been quite the journey….but that’s another post!!
